How to adjust to contact lenses: tips for new wearers

Starting contact lenses can feel unfamiliar at first. With the right fitting, safe habits, and a consistent routine, most new wearers become more comfortable over time. Fielmann Vision Care optometrists in Northern Illinois help patients learn how to insert, remove, clean, and wear contacts safely.

Follow your eye doctor's instructions first

Always follow the wearing schedule and care instructions provided by your optometrist and the lens manufacturer. Contact lenses sit directly on the eye, so safe use matters. Do not extend wear time or reuse lenses beyond the recommended replacement schedule.

Give yourself extra time

Plan extra time in the morning and evening while you are learning. Rushing can make insertion and removal harder. If your eyes feel tired, ask your provider whether a gradual wearing schedule is appropriate.

Build a consistent routine

Start with the same eye every time to avoid mixing up right and left lenses. Wash and dry your hands before handling contacts. Use fresh contact lens solution when required, and never use tap water or saliva on lenses or the case.

Know what discomfort means

Mild awareness can be normal at first, but pain, redness, worsening light sensitivity, discharge, or blurry vision are not signs to ignore. Remove your lenses and contact your eye doctor if symptoms continue.

Do not sleep in contacts unless prescribed

Sleeping in contact lenses can increase the risk of eye infection unless the lenses are specifically prescribed for extended wear and your optometrist has instructed you to use them that way.

Use reminders

Phone alerts can help you remember when to remove lenses, replace lenses, open a new box, reorder contacts, or replace your lens case. This is especially useful for bi-weekly and monthly lenses.

Follow up if contacts still feel difficult

If contacts remain uncomfortable, your optometrist may evaluate fit, lens material, dryness, allergies, solution sensitivity, or prescription needs. Sometimes a different brand or replacement schedule can improve comfort.

If you are new to contact lenses, schedule a contact lens fitting at Fielmann Vision Care in Northern Illinois. Our teams serve patients in communities such as Rockford, Woodstock, Belvidere, Algonquin, Machesney Park, Crystal Lake, Huntley, Lakemoor, and Antioch.
